Yalda: A Winter Solstice Celebration

  • De Anza High School 5000 Valley View Road Richmond, CA, 94803 United States (map)

Presented by the City of Richmond and Diaspora Arts Connection

Join us on Saturday, December 19, 2026, at De Anza High School in Richmond for a magical evening of music, dance, and community as we celebrate Yalda, the longest night of the year.

What Is Yalda?

Yalda is an ancient celebration of the winter solstice, observed across Iran, Afghanistan, and Central Asia. Marking the longest night of the year, it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and the promise of brighter days ahead. Families and friends traditionally gather to enjoy food, poetry, music, and one another's company.

This special celebration brings together artists from diverse cultural traditions for an evening of extraordinary performances featuring Kurdish vocalist Evin Şah, Iranian vocalist Parisa Vaaleh, Iranian-Azeri vocalist Ruhan Parsa, and Afghan vocalist Serena, under the musical direction of composer and pianist Nima Hafezieh. The evening will also feature captivating dance performances by the Nava Dance Collective.

Come celebrate the richness of our shared cultural heritage and the spirit of togetherness as we welcome the return of light through music, dance, and community.
